Pyrite Ammonite Brass Moon Ring

$ 60.00
This ring features a rare, pyritized ammonite fossil from Russia. During the Jurassic period, these ammonites died in a sea that contained a high concentration of iron which caused it to react to the sulfur in the water and therefore formed the iron pyrite which replaced the ammonite cell by cell. The fossil measures 11mm x 12.5mm and sits in a prong setting, accented by a crescent moon. The band is made out of brass and has a hammered texture. This ring is adjustable but fits most comfortably at sizes 6-9.

Ammonites were a shelled cephalopod. The extinction of ammonites coincided with the extinction of the dinosaurs. Egyptians named this fossil after their God, Ammon, because of its similar shape to a ram's horns. It was prized by Egyptian and Roman societies because it was seen as a deity symbol. Fossils represent time, eternity and evolution. In general they are used as amulets to increase one's life span, due to lineage.
