History and Metaphysical Properties:
This complex mineral gets its name from the Greek words “stauros” (stake or cross) and lithos (stone) due to its cross like formation. It has a hardness of 7-7.5 and contains iron, magnesium, zinc, aluminum, and silicon. Some also refer to Staurolite as “fairy crosses” because of the Appalachian legend that the mineral is formed from the tears of fairies, who wept when Cherokee people were forcibly removed from their land in the Appalachian Mountains.
Metaphysically, Staurolite is believed to help one connect with nature, plant and animal spirits, and fairies due to its Appalachian legends. Staurolite’s cross like pattern guides one inwards to stop bad habits and self-destruction. It is a stone of alignment that promotes physical well-being as well as spiritual protection. Sleeping or meditating with Staurolite may help with lucid dreaming and astral travel.
